Our healthcare system has often failed to provide appropriate and effective care for transgender individuals, contributing to many health disparities and unique health needs affecting transgender older adults. Transgender elders report higher rates of disability, depression, and general poor health than do their cisgender peers. Finding trans-affirming care can be especially challenging as one grows older and may have to rely on a greater number of healthcare specialists to provide care for age-related health conditions.
